Artichoke

By Jacob Wood Alcachofra (Cynara Scolymus) is the Brazilian name for Globe Artichoke. Alcachofra belongs to the Milk Thistle family and grows to a height of about two meters, producing large violet-green flower heads. The flower petals and fleshy flower bottoms are eaten as a vegetable throughout the world, which has led to it’s commercial cultivation in many parts of South and North America as well as Europe. Alcachofra is from a similarity in the flavor of the tuber in the Jerusalem artichoke to that of the fleshy base of the Artichoke flower, that the Jerusalem Artichoke has obtained it’s name. The plant has been employed therapeutically in the treatment of elevated lipid levels, although with mixed results. For example, a study done in the late 1970’s using cynarin at the 250mg to 750mg daily dose concluded that it did not alter cholesterol or triglyceride levels in patients with familial high cholesterol after 3 months of therapy. In contrast, however, a recent European study suggests that artichoke is efficacious in altering lipid values. After using a standardized artichoke extract (320mg/capsule) at a dose of 1 - 2 capsules 2 - 3 times a day for 6 weeks, total cholesterol and triglyceride values decreased by an average of 12.78% and 8.79% respectively. HDL cholesterol levels did not rise significantly. In other studies, tests have shown artichoke extract to increase liver bile flow by more than 100%. Uses of Artichoke: Artichoke was used as a food and medicine by ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. In Rome, this herb was an important item on the menu at feasts. Is Your Goal Really Weight Loss?

By Nathan Latvitis Are you ashamed of your weight? Do you have a goal weight that you want to reach through weight loss? Id say so, its been pushed into our brains many times over and over again that weight loss is what we want to accomplish. There are weight loss guides, weight loss supplements, and many other things that push weight loss. Many people even set their goals to be at a certain weight. Additionally, the medical community has developed an ideal weight chart, which can further add to the confusion about weight loss. Now, let me ask you a question. Is your goal really weight loss? Unless you are trying to make a weight class for wrestling or some other sport with weight classes, you may think that your goal is weight loss, but it really isnt. You are trying to lose that flubbery stuff attached to your body called FAT. Correct? So then, why do we measure our progress by how much we weigh? Why do we step on the bathroom scale and hope that those numbers will be lower than before? You see, our weight is affected by more than just how much fat is on our body. Some other factors include water, muscle, glycogen, and obviously if we have eaten anything earlier or used the bathroom lately. Our water weight fluctuates constantly. For instance, when we exhale water vapor comes out. When we sweat, we are sweating out water. There are also many more factors that can affect the amount of water in our body. Water is what usually causes those random gains or losses of a pound or two in weight that can make you happy or sad. It is almost physiologically impossible to lose a pound of fat in one day. One reason the low-carb or no-carb (also called ketogenic) diets are so attractive is because of the large initial loss of weight. However, this weight is not necessarily fat. When carbohydrates are restricted the body has a backup store of them located in the liver and muscles in the form of something called glycogen. The human body can store approximately 400 grams of glycogen. In larger individuals this number can increase. In addition to this, for each gram of glycogen stored in the human body, 3 grams of water are also stored. If you figure it out, this would equate to about 1600 grams (3.5 pounds) of glycogen and water. When you stop or limit your consumption of carbohydrates, your body starts using its glycogen stores. After a couple of days that 1600 grams (3.5 pounds) of glycogen and water are gone. Also, as an adaptation to the restriction of carbohydrates, your body produces these things called ketones. Ketones also appear to have a diuretic effect, which would mean an even greater loss of water. In addition to water, if you have been working out lately to speed along your weight loss (you mean fat loss, right?) progress you probably have gained some muscle doing so. This gain in muscle can also affect the numbers you see on the scale. Muscle is also more dense than fat. You may be wondering how you are going to measure your progress now that the scale doesnt mean as much as it used to. Well, there are several methods to measure your body fat percentage. None of these methods are 100% accurate, but they will be much more useful than the use of a scale. One of the simplest ways is to use a caliper. You can usually find these at your local sporting goods/fitness shop. If you cant find them locally, you can order them off the internet. Calipers measure the thickness of a skin fold on your triceps. Then there are directions that come with the caliper that show you how to use the number you get to derive your body fat %. If you dont want to go out and buy some calipers, there is a body fat % calculator on my website. The calculator uses the circumference of several parts of your body and then plugs them into a formula developed by the U.S. Navy to derive an approximation of your body fat %. You can find this calculator here: http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/bodyfat.html There are also much more accurate ways to measure your body fat % like buoyancy testing or the use of special lasers. If you insist on knowing your progress by weight loss and want to use a scale, try to weigh yourself at the same time everyday. Probably the best time would be right when you wake up in the morning and before you do anything. So, your new goal should be to shoot for fat loss and not weight loss. Dont necessarily trust the scale all the time as it can be deceiving - your weight is affected by more than just how much fat you have gained or lost. In addition, it is almost physiologically impossible to gain or lose a pound of fat in one day. Nathan Latvaitis runs a website at http://www.weight-loss-resources.com where you can find even more fitness/weight loss articles, product reviews, book reviews, calculators, a message board, and more. ‘I’m So Sad’ — Psychotherapist Jane Firbank Answers Problem Letters

By Jane Firbank Dear Jane, I have felt very unhappy for months. There are times when my spirits lift but only briefly. I tend to worry a lot and feel stressed and cannot see any joy in life. I am 30 years old, a female and a lecturer. I have a lot on my plate work-wise. Yet I have few fixed working hours and some of my work can be done at home or at the library. I am involved in several tasks as well as having written a thesis and waiting for feedback. I had a bad experience when I left my previous job eight months ago as I couldn’t give them notice. Physically I feel run down and long for free time; yet when I give myself time off I feel bored and unhappy. I had a bout of pneumonia two years ago and tend to think about the possibility of a recurrence. Im also worrying about doing too much work and missing out on life — but then I worry about not doing enough! I am not married and have no-one in my life. I have creative tendencies but they are not made use of in my work at the moment. M. Dear M, Your letter gives a clear insight into the origins of depression. It’s all there! Trauma. That bout of pneumonia. That bad experience when you left your last job. Stress and suspense. Waiting for feedback on your thesis. A lot of work, unstructured so you can never feel quite sure that you’ve finished for the day. Lack of flow. You are not using your creative tendencies. Your work is not bringing you joyful challenge and achievement. Your talents and skills are not being satisfyingly expressed Lack of people in your life. We all need friends and intimacy, the feeling of being loved and needed. Worry, worry and worry. On top of this you may be physically in poor shape. Not enough good quality food, fresh air and exercise. Every improvement you make, however small, in any of these areas towards the direction of life and fulfilment will make you feel better. A priority is to reduce the amount of time worrying. Pointless worry is corrosive. where can i buy phentermine tree top pharmacy phentermine cheap generic phentermine buy phentermine no rx

Lawn Moles and Proper Lawn Care

By Hans Dekker Are your making mountains out of your molehills? Although lawn moles are underground creatures, the benefits they add to your garden are clearly visible and far outweigh the disadvantages. Of the six species of mole found in North America, the Eastern mole (or gray mole) is the most common. Moles are about the size of chipmunks and weigh from three to six ounces. A tiny creature, its total length is just six to eight inches. Many gardeners and groundskeepers are under the mistaken impression that lawn moles eat the roots of their plants and turf grasses. However, moles are insectivores. Their primary diet is earthworms and grubs and a single mole can eat more than 140 grubs and cutworms daily. They also feast on destructive garden pests like snails, beetles, and millipedes. In fact, at just over a quarter-pound, a mole can consume 45 to 50 pounds of worms and insects each year. The greatest harm that mole tunneling does to turf grass is by separating soil from roots. Still, the moles digging actually improves soil quality by turning and aerating the soil and mixing accumulated nutrients throughout the excavation. Moles dont continually dig each time they forage for food. Once a tunnel system is established, it is infrequently extended. In fact, the only signs of mole activity you might see are those when the mole must repair its construction. When disturbed, moles may temporarily vacate the area, but generally return within a week or two. In addition, when a tunnel is abandoned, a new mole inhabitant will recolonize using the handiwork of its predecessor. For these reasons, even the most effective method of mole removal, trapping, is not a permanent solution to a mole problem. Besides which, the three types of mole traps that work with any success sound like relics from the Spanish inquisition harpoons, scissor-jaws, and choker loops. In fact, numerous remedies have been used to try to control moles Pickle juice, red pepper, razor blades, bleach, moth balls, brambles, human hair braids and hair balls, vibrators, ultra sonic devices, and poisons offer inconsistent and generally ineffective results; many including environmentally unfriendly side effects. As in all elements of lawn care, the best solution to a lawn mole problem is applying practical gardening principles. Mole tunnels (except for the hilled entrances) are typically deep enough to be almost invisible. Over-watering your yard brings earthworms and other invertebrates close to the surface, making it necessary for the moles to move up in search of them. Reducing the amount or frequency of watering may help both moles and their prey stay underground where they are most beneficial to your lawn. Another solution to a lawn mole problem is to reduce the size of your lawn, converting it to gardens, paths, and hedgerows. First, moles prefer straight tunnel runs. However, more importantly, converting some lawn to gardens, paths, hedgerows and patio areas adds eye-appeal, reduces signs of damage, and in addition attract birds and butterflies to your property. Depression: The Death Fantasy

By Samantha Weaver Depression affects 1 in 3 people in the UK and can vary from mild to extremely severe. Having suffered severe depression for the majority of my life, I feel equipped enough to be able to discuss the way the mind works in relation to the topic of depression and death. At some point while suffering with severe depression, I began to start thinking about death. Death I eventually began to believe as being the only option available to me to rid myself of the pain I was experiencing. Of course, I now know that it is not the only option, but I sincerely believed that it was at the time. The death fantasy that those who suffer with severe depression begin to experience had pounced on me and was starting to cloud and distort my mind. There wasnt a day that passed that I wasnt thinking about death in one way or another. At first, I had simple thoughts. What would my funeral be like? Who would attend it? But over time, these thoughts became more isolated and the questions I began to ask myself started to turn into images in my mind. I could actually picture myself following through with suicide. I would question how easy it would be to kill myself? Could I just step out off the pavement into the road and in front of oncoming traffic? Could I jump from a bridge? Could I hang myself or poison myself? Which of these methods would be the quickest, the least painful? Of course, I knew what I was thinking wasnt right. I knew I should not be torturing myself with this type of thought, but I couldnt stop myself, I couldnt help myself and I started to think about things more deeply. How long would it be before someone noticed I wasnt around? How long would it take for my body to be found? The worst times were when I was sat alone, at home with nothing on TV, no-one to talk to and no-one around that could distract me or talk some degree of sense back into me. If I went to the kitchen to make a sandwich, I was troubled when I picked a knife out of the cutlery drawer and began considering how I could use it to slit my wrists. I only ever made my sandwich and never became a self-harmer, but the thoughts were there, the death fantasy always lingering in my mind, in my daily routines, ready to pounce on me if things got too tough, if I found I was unable to cope with something. Its like it became an opt-out option there if I needed it. I started to question if this type of thinking meant that I was crazy? Maybe I wasnt right in the head; maybe I actually was a loony or a psycho? For certainly any normal person wouldnt be thinking about death, wouldnt be as fixated on it as me? Many people think that suicide attempts are a cry for help but I can categorically say that they are not necessarily that. Depression distorts the mind so much that all a person can think about is the negativity in their lives and a way out of the pain - death. They hate to feel sad, to feel depressed, to feel as thought they are unable to function. No-one that suffers with depression wants to feel the way that they do and it is a very scary thing to find yourself contemplating your own death in your mind. Thankfully, I managed to get myself into my GPs practise. But the fear of telling a professional the type of thoughts that you are thinking is huge. I worried that I would be sectioned, worried that I would be thrown into a straight jacket and dismissed as crazy in a mental institution. The courage that I had to find to discuss what was happening in my head was immense. However, it took strength, courage and a strong belief in that I was doing the right thing to help myself. And the advice I would give anyone else who may be suffering depression and in a similar position to that which I was in is to seek the help, to talk to someone, to try to do something before considering the only option that you think is available to you. Because death isnt your only option - you can get better and have a life depression free. I am living proof. In Praise of Curiosity

By Mary Rose Maguire During a family get-together, one of my favorite cousins and I caught up with each other’s lives. Andrew works in Washington, DC (By the way, he’s 28, single, handsome, and very sweet. Looking for a classy, conservative gal..). We were talking about business and technology when he said, “Mary Rose, you are into so much stuff! You have such a spirit of curiosity. I think that’s just great.” I thanked him and said, “Andrew, to me it is the essence of staying young. When you’re learning new things, you’re growing and I never want to stop growing!” He smiled and agreed with me. The trait of curiosity is one that can greatly affect a single person’s opportunities in finding love. How interested are you in discovering new people, new places, new skills? When was the last time you took a class? Or when was the last time you visited a new group of people, such as a book club or a volunteer service? I remember when I discovered contra dancing. A friend introduced me to this highly energetic and enormously fun style of dance. Because I loved to dance to anything from Big Band to House music, I quickly became addicted. Not only was this type of dancing very fun, it allowed me to socialize with a wide variety of people and turned out to be an excellent form of exercise! (Seriously the contra dancers I knew all brought at least one change of clothing with them for the night plus a big, fluffy towel. When I say we worked out, I mean it!) I also started to attend our local art crawls that were held on the last Friday of the month. These type of events happen in many cities. A certain area of town that was filled with art galleries would host these wonderful outdoor parties during the warmer months. There was usually a band (or a drumming circle) that provided music and a few nearby restaurants served food outdoors. It was another way to get out of the familiar and learn something new about my local artist community. When you’re older, it is easier to stay attached to the daily routine. If you have a stressful job, it is understandable that when you arrive home, the last thing you want to do is go out again. But it isn’t necessary to always go out. You can learn new things by researching topics on the Internet or viewing a documentary. Whatever you do, use your free time to expand your universe, if even slightly. If you’re with an online dating service, you have given yourself yet another way to build curiosity. When you meet a new person, embrace the opportunity as a way to learn something new. It could be a new way of looking at something or learning about a new restaurant or new hobby. Look for the new in everything around you. Men find such women very intriguing. Women find such men attractive. Ask questions and listen for the nuggets of truth. Work on filling your “Curiosity Tank.” It will take you to some wonderfully, fascinating places! Tin Ceilings Of Old And New

By Arturo Ronzon The world of fashion works in a funny way. After a certain amount of time passes, the fashion of old becomes the new trend and what was new yesterday starts to become old really fast. Take the tin ceiling for example. Once upon a time, tin ceilings were the rave of the building industry. Tin ceiling panels were put on almost every new construction. They were the thing to have. Now, after many many years and many many fashion trends, the tin ceiling is making a strong comeback. Tin ceiling and wall panels are starting to make appearances in newly constructed buildings. The old tin ceilings in the old buildings are getting a lot of restoration and some are even being sold as antiques. Tin is a very soft and malleable metal and does not react to the environment very much. Steel can rust if not protected over the years but tin will remain the same. A buff or two and the shine will be restored. This amazing durability is the main reason why tin ceilings were never taken down and replaced. As such, tin ceilings remained where they were to await the next designer trend where they would be the center of attention again. Tin styles were popular decades ago because many an elaborate pattern were carved or stamped or both into it. Since tin was so malleable, craftsman of old were able to let loose their creativity and imaginations onto pieces of metal that they could shape to their hearts content. In todays world with advances in manufacturing technology, tin ceilings and panels can be produced to meet large demands easily. Advanced tooling technology allows a high degree of repeatability so that popular designs can be produced accurately and sold to consumers. Advances in metallurgy adds a new dimension to tin ceilings where other metals such as silver, gold or platinum are bonded with tin to create very artistic looking alloys. For those who can afford it, the antique tin ceilings and panels will add the beauty of yesteryear to their homes or offices. For everyone else, tin ceiling panels are quite affordable because tin is one the cheapest metals on earth. The Two Immutable Share-Stealing Laws

By Tom Dougherty Take this as an absolute: If you want your brand to steal market share, you must find a means to convince your competitors customers to change their minds and their purchasing behaviors. In other words, you must get them to stop doing what they are currently doing and choose differently. There are many reasons why exciting this customer change is a difficult endeavor. Among the most obvious is simply inertia of rest. Your customers, like those of your competitors, are change adverse. There is an old marketing adage that says, It is easier to keep current customers than it is to get new ones. As barriers to change, there is also force of habit, satiation and God forbid, your competitors customers might even be satisfied with their current product or service. Strategically, there are many disciplines that we follow when creating brands and marketing strategies that steal market share. We utilize every one of them in the marketing strategies we create for our clients so that they can spend their marketing dollars more efficiently and win without having to be the biggest spender with the largest share of voice. When a brand firm, marketing company, or ad agency says the answer to growing market share is simply to spend more it demonstrates a simple lack of understanding about your customer and their relationship with the brands they currently use and buy. Permission is an Imperative For those of you who believe that you can effectively influence the purchase decisions of your most coveted customers without making fundamental changes to your brand read no further. Our advice to you is spend more and watch your competitors who are dedicated to building their brand as an impetus for growing market share take-off, even without the largest share of voice. For those of you who have come to realize that all of the marketing and advertising arguments that you put forth in the competitive market place find their permission to be important in the DNA of your brand, read on. Trying to fix your marketing and advertising efforts without a fundamental understanding of what your brand is and how it provides permission to your target market is like taking an aspirin to treat a brain tumor. The process may give you some temporary comfort but the outcome is anything but positive. Our goal is not a temporary spike in sales, any ad agency can do that by spending more. Rather our goal is to change customer behavior permanently through weaving the essence of our target customer into the brand. Changing customer behavior may be a bit of a misnomer really because in reality, brand permissions must change to more effectively reflect the precepts of your customer, not vice a versa. But, the end result is the same the customer chooses differently. The Two Rules There are two basic rules to get your target to choose differently change their hearts and change their minds. You cant expect your competitors customers to abandon their existing brand unless your brand can break into BOTH their emotions and their intellect. This is the foundation for what a successful a share-stealing brand does it breaks into both the hearts and minds of your competitors customers. Most brand companies design brands that appeal to your customers hearts and a few build brands that appeal to their minds. This is because they see brand as equity and not as the very basis of persuasion. This bipolar brand strategy is not nearly enough. You have to be able to break into the customers hearts AND minds at the same time, to steal them. This is how the experts at Stealing Share build brands to maximize growth and it is surest way to ensure continuous share growth with your existing investments. A Scientific Approach How do we scientifically do this with great consistently? First you must research your customers emotional and intellectual precepts: 1. We identify their emotional bonds to their existing brand. 2. We identify their mental bonds to their existing brand. 3. We isolate their most powerful motivations, so we discover how we can steal their hearts. 4. We isolate their most powerful convictions so we can discover how we can steal their minds. Then we develop the most powerful emotional and mental strategy. 5. We combine our understanding of their emotional bonds to their existing brand with our understanding of their most powerful motivations to develop your strategy for stealing their hearts. 6. We combine our understanding of their mental bonds to their existing brand with our understanding of their most powerful convictions to develop your strategy for stealing their minds. 7. We then fuse emotional appeal and aesthetics into a motivating and penetrating look and feel that will steal their emotional desires. 8. We then combine truth and reason into a message that will steal their intellectual self-description. In short, we transform the research insights into an emotional and aesthetic appeal and to steal their hearts, and construct a factual and rational message to steal their minds. This requires more then just a logo and theme line, it requires an integrated and robust marketing plan and advertising program to be built around the key insights that formed the rock solid foundation of your brand strategy. One thing is for certain; your most coveted customers seek a defined level of consistency in their life. Not so long ago, brand management used to think that consistency was their hallmark for a great brand. However, our understanding of the depth of that consistency has changed as we have made effectiveness and permissions our science. Consistency is about honest permissions. It is graded not on consistency of color, form and message (which are all important too) but in consistency of promise and scope of permission. Any promise or claim that your advertising makes that is not granted full permission from the brand strategy that it is built upon is less than half effective. Without full permission from the brand strategy derived from a complete understanding of the target whose essence is encapsulated in the brand, the simple answer is to spend more because more than half of your marketing dollars will have been wasted on an ineffective message. Following two simple rules, you can be more effective than your competition by making your marketing dollars work harder for you instead of having to work harder for more marketing dollars to spend. Tom Dougherty CEO, Senior Strategist at Stealing Share, Inc. Tom began his strategic marketing and branding career in Saudi Arabia working for the internationally acclaimed Saatchi & Saatchi. His brand manager at the time referred to Tom as a marketing genius, and Tom demonstrated his talents to clients such as Ariel detergent, Pampers and many other brands throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa. After his time overseas, Tom returned to the US where he worked for brand agencies in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. He continued to prove himself as a unique and strategic brand builder for global companies. How to Construct A Powerful Profit Pulling Business Portfolio

By Ugo Okonkwo What is a portfolio and do I really need one? A portfolio is simply a group of investments held by an investor. Its a very carefully chosen selection of businesses and generally, yes; its a good idea to have one. Lets look at it this way. Imagine that you owned an umbrella shop. If it didnt rain for several weeks, you would make no sales at all and therefore, you would make no money. If your shop sold umbrellas as well as wellington boots, raincoats, ponchos, sun hats, sun cream, sun glasses, ski shoes, hats, coats and scarves, chances are, you would make a sale whatever the weather was. When it comes to starting business as an Internet Marketer, you actually have a lot of choice. If you are good at spotting niches and if you are skilled enough to create a product then you have this as an option available to you. Alternatively, allow other people to create the product and all you have to do is market the product as an affiliate. If the nature of the business allows it, you can build networks of marketers and/or customers and grow your business this way. Whatever route you chose to go, you will ultimately be in business to sell a product or service. The not so good news is this: Despite the excellence of your goods or the amount of skill, wit and charm with which you promote your wares, not everyone will be interested in what you have to offer all of the time. In fact advertising standards suggest that less than 5 in every 100 people that you approach will say yes! But you can save the day, keep your options open and make your profit regardless. If you happen to have a variety of services then you automatically increase the chances of selling at least one product to your prospect. It makes excellent business sense to have a business portfolio. Although most well known entrepreneurs make most of their money from one primary source, many do have their finger in more than one pie at the same time. If sales or signups go down in one area, you may be doing well elsewhere and still be in profit overall. If your product is seasonal, you would still want to be making sales whatever time of year it was. That said, exactly what goes into creating the ultimate portfolio of businesses in internet marketing? I will use one portfolio that I have created as an example. The Internet is now a force to be reckoned with regards to shopping largely due to the growth and extensive advertising campaigns of companies such as Amazon and Ebay. If you own a website, become an Amazon affiliate and position shopping links for your visitors on your site. Visitors may not be interested in the e-book that you spent many late nights writing but if they are in the mood to go shopping online and they spy your shop here amazon link, hey presto, youll make some cash! Next tip: Choose programs that are easy to promote. Programs that have a good simple product that everybody needs. Choose a program that offers a good simple pay structure. What about a fun program? Everybody has played the lottery at least once. Would it be easy to promote a program based on the Worlds Largest Lotto? If you are promoting more than one affiliate program, you will almost definitely need a downline builder. This is a program that houses all your online businesses so to speak. You advertise your downline builder and when people signup, they see all your other programs and can consider whether or not to join. downline builders are efficiency and economy exemplified. Buildreferrals and Referralware are two such examples. Indispensable business building tools. After youve spent a few weeks building your business on the internet, you will begin to notice this: There is a large group of people of all ages and backgrounds who will ask this question on a regular basis: I want to start an internet business but I dont know where to start. Can you help me? People asking this question pop up all over the place In online discussion forums, in your inbox, you name it. Heres your chance to help a hot prospect to become successful and thereby become more successful yourself in the process. Read how: Introduce them to a program that will teach, guide and educate them for you, making them into a professional, well-learned marketer. Imagine having several people like these as partners in your business. Check out Michael Russells MPAM and Steve Leung of CashCultures Make Money University. Let these professional programs teach your Newbie all about search engines, traffic exchange programs, rotators, email list building, safelists and every other conceivable advertising method available online today. If they sign up to any recommended programs, you effectively build your up business simultaneously. Everybody needs a business building tool but not everybody may need your particular service or product. So aim to promote or be affiliated with educational tools, website builders, downline builders and so on. In summary, many programs offer you what seems like the opportunity to make a million in a very short time as well as a host of other fantastic benefits. But always stop to ask: What does this program have to offer my customers or my downline? Will it be easy to promote? Will the conversion rate be good? Will my portfolio be balanced so that I am offering different prospects different types of goods and services? Adopt an I have something for everyone approach in business.
